Dog Days of August Walk - 2026

This is one of our favorite events of the year - our Dog Days of August Walk. Bring your doggie or get your doggie fix on this ~4-mile flat walk through woods and wetlands and along the Potomac River with views of Mount Vernon.

Piscataway Park is part of the National Park system and is run jointly with the Accokeek Foundation. The park is also home to National Colonial Farm, a living history museum that depicts a Maryland middle-class family farm on the eve of the American Revolution.

From the Accokeek Foundation website: "The Accokeek Foundation is located in Piscataway Park, within the traditional ancestral homelands of Piscataway People both past and present. We acknowledge and honor with gratitude the land and waterways, and the people who have stewarded this land through the generations. . . . By honoring the park's river location, the Piscataway people and the sacredness of this land, the Accokeek Foundation seeks to share with people and communities through nature, agriculture, cultural history and foodways, the value that this land and soil hold, including communities' reliance on it for sustenance."

Per Accokeek Foundation regulations, dogs must be on a leash under 10 feet long at all times, and "If your dog does its business anywhere along a trail or in a camping area, you need to pack it out."

We'll have a brown bag lunch in the picnic grove after our walk.

This free activity is open to members and non-members of Women Outdoors. Non-members are welcome to attend two WO events as guests. On your third event, we'll ask you to join the Mid-Atlantic Region of Women Outdoors. You can also join right now by clicking on this Join Us link.

Registration will close on Thursday, July 30.

Bring:

Snacks and lots of water
Brown bag lunch
Hat/sunglasses
Sun screen/bug spray
Optional - National Park Service Passport to get it stamped.

Specific meeting location and inclement weather information. Your automatic confirmation email will provide the exact location where we will meet for the event. Please respect the trip leader and other participants and arrive on time - 10:00 a.m.

The automatic confirmation email is the only email you will receive about this event. Be sure and save it or print it out because there may not be good cell service at the event location.

RSVP and Cancellation – IMPORTANT – PLEASE READ

If you register but then are unable to attend, please cancel your registration. Events may be cancelled due to lack of attendance, as well as changes in weather or other circumstances.

If you must cancel at the last minute, call or text the trip leader (see your confirmation email for contact details) and let her know who it is who is calling/texting.

National Gathering 2026 (21 Aug 2026)

Fees are $230 - $390 based on lodging choice and length of stay

Friday (8/21/26) noon to Sunday (8/23/26) 3 pm

This 3-day/2-night option includes 7 meals from Friday lunch to Sunday lunch - $230 (excludes Private Rooms)

Friday (8/21/26) noon to Monday (8/24/26) 3 pm

This 4-day/3-night option includes 10 meals from Friday lunch to Monday lunch - $330 (Cabins, RV, Tent) and $390 (Private Room)

Please review our Lodging Options BEFORE registering! You will need to decide what is important to you and select your housing accordingly! Some options are limited so register early! Note: Private rooms have sold out, but you can request to be on the waiting list during the registration process.

Registration Deadlines

Register and pay by July 31 to avoid a $25 late fee.
Registration Closes on August 17.
Scholarships are available to help you attend - application deadline July 17.

Cancellation Policy - if you cancel:

By July 20: Full refund
July 21 - July 31: $25 cancellation fee
August 1 - Aug 17: $50 cancellation fee only IF we are able to replace you with a new registration. Otherwise no refund.
August 18 or later: NO Refund

Note: Refunds for cancellations occurring August 1 or later will be processed after we return from the Gathering.
